Rain, Rain Go Away... - This month we are definitely getting the April showers that bring May flowers but I don't remember every having such a wet April before. Having lived in Southern California for the first three decade of my life, I am used to one kind of weather pattern - sunny. Now that I am living on the central coast of California, I am used to two kinds of weather - sunny or cool and foggy. So having four days in a row of rain and a thunder and lightning storm last night, well, that worthy of its own Quick Take! I just hope that the rain stops by next week because Bella is going on a two day trip with her class to Sacramento and the Gold Country to learn about California history. I'll be one of the chaperones and although we won't be sleeping in tents (I think it's more of a primitive cabin) I'd rather do it in sunny weather!

The Family Tree Grows - It may be grey and dreary but we received joyous news this week - my sister EL gave birth to her fourth child, a little girl named Harriet Rose. Congratulations, sis! And I am an aunt for the fifth time. Yay! Just call me Auntie B. ;-) Look at her...how sweet is she?!

(This Quick Take is long so it counts as two.)

Accidents, Threats & Videotapes - Unfortunately that bit of news was hampered a couple days later when I got into a car accident. Remember what I said about the rain? On Tuesday, I dropped the boys off at pre school. Bella was on Easter break so she, Matthew and I were driving home. Just as we turned around a bend in the highway there was a pile up from a previous accident. I hit the brakes and the car seemed to slide all over the road but I was able to stop in time. I breathed a sigh of relief and just as I was thinking, "I hope the guy in back of me stops in time...bam! We get slammed from behind. I move to the side of the road and the woman (60ish?) was very apologetic. We see that no one is hurt and the damage doesn't look too bad etc. As we exchange info some guy comes up and starts videotaping us. She walks over to him and tells him to turn off his video camera (it was a larger one), that the accident is over, this is a private matter etc. They sort of get into it and I hear the guy yell, "I know my rights... don't touch me... I'm suing... assault... " and the like. I'm thinking what kind of crazy guy is this and why is she talking to him and not ignoring him so we can get out of here?

I finish writing my info down (I already had hers) and I see the lady talking and gesturing to the guy as he is walking backwards videotaping her, sort of egging her on. Soon they have walked so far down the road I can't see them anymore. I look around. Am I being punked? Should I leave? I left my info in her car and got back into my van and out of the rain. I am sitting there wondering if I should make a u-turn and go find the lady. I don't want her to get hurt. Thankfully, just then some cops stopped to make sure I am okay. I explain to them what happened and they said I could leave and they'd go and check on the guy and the lady. To make a long story short (oops, too late!) the lady came back safely. (And she has been more than generous in making sure we are okay.) She told me later that the guy likes to videotape people and threatens to sue but he has no case here. Meanwhile, my Sienna is in the shop to see what kind of damage has been done. However, if you are browsing the internet and you find a YouTube video of an older woman arguing with some random guy on the road and you see a short, chubby Hispanic mom with a WTH? look on her face in the background, you'll know that's me. ;-)

Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti - After that harrowing accident, Bella and I decided to go home and make a cup of hot chocolate, warm up some cinnamon rolls for breakfast and watch an old movie. We've been on a musical kick and it all started when she said they were singing songs from the Sound of Music in her music class. I told her we should watch the movie together since every night when the boys are going to sleep and Brian is showering or getting things ready for work the next day, Bella and I have a half hour window where we cuddle up on the couch and watch a movie (well, a portion of it) together. Sometimes it will be a Disney tween movie or an episode of Good Luck, Charlie (which I, ahem, actually enjoy) but last week I put on The Sound of Music instead. She loved it! We watched a little each night, completing it twice. This week we finished watching Meet Me in St. Louis with Judy Garland. Tonight we are going to start the 1949 version of Little Women with June Allyson. It's not actually a musical but it is such a sweet movie, I think she'll like it. Any other suggestions of what we should watch? (She prefers color and is not really into black and white, which is a bummer since ¾ of my movie collection is in B&W.)

Flashback Friday Five - Back in 2003, bloggers looked forward to filling out "The Friday Five" at the end of the week. I'll close with a flashback of what I posted nine years ago, almost to the day.

Friday Five: Music Edition

1. What was the first band you saw in concert? Let's see, years back it was a big Rock for Life concert in Orange County, CA. I think that first really got me into Christian alternative/hardcore music. But one of the first concerts I most vividly remember was when I drove to Santa Barbara, CA with my sister BC to see the hardcore band Focused. Oh, those guys were so awesome and so in love with God. They were the first band I ever interviewed (for the underground music zine I used to do.) Ah, such memories!

2. Who is your favorite artist/band now? Okay, you can tell I am a mommy now because at the moment I am listening to "Wags the Dog" by the Wiggles. (It is Bella's Wiggle's hour; that is the only time I am guaranteed some uninterrupted computer time!) But as far as I'm concerned, I have been listening to a lot of Jeremy Camp, Kutless, and Sixpense None the Richer. But I must say that I also loooove 80's alternative music - The Cure, The Smiths, Morrissey, New Order, Psychedelic Furs, etc. Plus, good old classics like Dean Martin (reminds me of our honeymoon. Sigh.)

3. What's your favorite song? This is a tough one. The song that always reminds me of Brian is The Cure's "Lovesong." I never tire of it.

4. If you could play any instrument, what would it be? Um, I always wished I could play the guitar, write my own music and sing my own songs. I may be able to get away with writing lyrics but the only instrument I can play is the Fisher-Price toddler drum set and my voice it not fit for anyplace other than the car while driving or perhaps in church if the choir sings real loud and drowns me out.

5. If you could meet any musical icon (past or present), who would it be and why? Back in my teen days I may have said someone like Morrissey from the Smiths but now I just see musical "icons" as regular joes and can't think of one in particular that I'd single out. So I'll have to think about that one.

LOL! Have a great weekend!

TTIF Already? - How can it possibly be Friday already? The days we were absent from school has thrown me off so in my mind it feels like it's only Wednesday. On the one hand, that's great news since it is the weekend already. On the other hand, I'm two days short with the things I had to get done this week. Oh, well. That means I better quickly get this done and get back to work.

BaSP Blog Contest - First things first, I have to tell you that you must go over to my sister's blog Barefoot and Sometimes Pregnant and enter her Year 3 Blog Birthday contest. She is simply fabulous! Whereas I share with you my struggles to keep a clean house or get more crafty or not kill my garden within the first few weeks, EL is a Martha Stewart-like chica. She is the sister most likely to be in labor with her fourth child and in between contractions she'll manage to bake a loaf of bread, can a jar of preserves, gather vegetable in her garden for a homemade stew, milk the cow, sew a new outfit for the baby and whittle a baby crib. I kid you not. She amazes me. Anyway... she says:

Since barefoot and sometime pregnant is all about homemaking, I am giving away the perfect gift for any homemaker or future homemaker. Enter to win a copy of Style, Sex and Substance by Hallie Lord (if you already have a copy, you can give this one away to a friend), an All-in-one Organizer from the company thirty-one, and a custom apron. Yes, I will sew you an apron of your choice! (I will give you some pattern types to choice from and fabric options.) The giveaway will close on Sunday and I will post the winner on Monday.

Click on over and tell her that I sent you! ;-)

Call Me Aunt B. - Oh, and also keep my sister in your prayers because she is now 39 weeks pregnant and any day she could have baby #4 (although she tends to go late.) We are all excited to meet our new family member! I can't wait to see if I'm an auntie to a little niece or nephew.

RoL - Speaking of Blog Birthdays, this year our original website Revolution of Love.com will be ten years old in November! Can you believe it?! We started it when we were newly married and only had Bella. I had a lot more time to write back then! Since I was still new to mommyhood I wrote more for newly married couples and Catholic singles. There are a few articles about dating/courtship and chastity that still get a lot of hits. That's why we haven't pulled the site off the web. Over the next few months I'll be reposting some of those articles here since the blog gets a lot for traffic that the website does.

Man, I'm Old - As for this blog, next month I'll have been blogging for nine years! My first post was back in 2003. That's just crazy. Although I've been around awhile, some years I only posted a handful of times. In 2003 I have only 22 posts. (Although, I did delete a few that had dead links or outdated info.) I think 2011 is the first year that I posted consistently with over 100 posts. Okay, okay. Useless facts. I'll celebrate next month and, inspired by my sis, I'll put together a little contest too. :-)

The Hunger Games vs The Flu - My mom called while I was typing and she asked me how the movie was last week. I forgot I was going to mention that. (Thanks for the reminder, mom.) As I mentioned last week, I had just finished reading The Hunger Games and planned to go see the movie on Saturday. That is a story in itself. Friday night my stomach was a little queasy but I didn't think much of it. Matthew woke up at 6:30 AM but I was really feeling awful. Brian took the baby, I got sick and then went back to bed and slept until 10 AM. I woke up feeling a bit out of it but not too bad. I figured I must have gotten food poisoning. Brian said if I was up to it I could go ahead and go to the movies since I already bought my ticket and who knows when I'd get another afternoon off. True. I got ready and went. The movie was packed but luckily I found a secluded seat where I wouldn't be touching anyone, in case I really was sick.

The movie started and from the get go it was amazing. I thought they did a great job making the book come alive on the screen, editing what they needed to but still keeping the tone of the book. I certainly think you'd get more out of the movie if you read it first because there are a lot of subtle things that you won't pick up on unless you've read the book first. And although it was not gory-graphic it was still incredibly disturbing to see little kids get murdered like that. More disturbing was the fact that it was also viewed as reality tv/entertainment. With the current obsession with reality TV and the growing lack of disrespect for life, it does not seem too far fetched to think that we could one day return to the days of the martyrs in the Roman Coliseum.

As the movie continued we got to the part where Katniss was looking for the hurt Peeta and we lost our picture. We could hear it but not see it. We sat there as they tried to fix it. The manager came in and told us they were working on it but they couldn't rewind what we missed because it would throw off the show times for the people behind us. The theater nearly had a District 11 riot (that was one of the last scenes we just saw) when he told us that. Finally they got the movie back on and they rewound it to the part where Rue and Katniss were together. We yelled, "NO!!!" We were not going to sit there and watch Rue's death all over again. It was hard enough the first time when we could hear people in the theater quietly sobbing. Fifteen minutes later, they found the right spot and continued the movie. The end seemed a little rushed but I still loved the movie. Did you see it? What did you think?

After we were leaving the theater, the manager gave us all free passes so at least I got a free movie out of it! Plus, I got over my phobia of going to the movies alone, so I am ready to go! On a side note, however, I got home and by the end of the day I was much worse. I realized I had the flu and not food poisoning. As I lay on my bed dead to the world I kept praying I didn't get anyone sick in the theater...from touching the seat or the handrail or the door handle. I kept picturing the movie Contagion. Sorry, my fellow movie goers!

Tiny Bubbles - That's it for now. I better get back to my boys. While I type I'll often put the bubble machine on the bookshelf and they play happily trying to pop bubbles or catch them on their tongue. (Ew.) Here is a photo of them right now still in their pj's. Although Matthew looks like he's ignoring the bubbles and looking for a good book. Maybe he'll have a little more Brian than Bobbi in him. ;-)

I am sorry to say that I am only half awake this morning. I was up at 3:30 AM with Matthew, who was either teething or feeling sick. Whatever it was, he was not happy and not sleeping. I can't say that I felt much different at the time. After two hours I was finally able to get him back to sleep so I could catch another 30 minutes before I had to get up with the rest of the kids. It's times like these I think I should start drinking coffee.

The other day I met an acquaintance I haven't seen in awhile. She remembered me when I was pregnant with Andrew. When I told her I had four kids now she actually gasped. She stared at me for a minute and said I don't look like I have four kids, which got me to thinking... What is a mom with four kids supposed to look like?? I don't know but if she saw me right now she'd be saying, "You look like this and you only have four kids?" Grr. (Okay, let's think of something more upbeat...)

sales.JPG

I am in the last month of our school fundraising and Brian and I were actually able to solicit some nice gifts to be auctioned off. It is surprising that I am on the committee because I am terrible at sales. I like helping people but when it comes to talking them into buying something (or giving me something for free) I can't bring myself to push it. There is another mom on the committee that has the ability to walk into a business cold turkey and she walks out with a complimentary deluxe package worth $500. I walk into a business and say, "You don't want to donate something, right? No, I didn't think so. Okay, thanks anyway." Every once in awhile I do get a positive response to which I say, "Oh, you do? Are you sure? I'll understand if you don't. I know money is tight so don't worry if you can't..." Yeah, I'm not a salesman. The other mom said I had a pleasant demeanor so they would donate. "Pleasant"? I don't know. That sounds an awful lot like the blind date with the "great personality." Oh, well. I'll take what I can get.

- 4 -

mom_card.jpg

At least the soliciting of donations has put my "mommy cards" to good use. What's a mommy card? It's like a business card but geared towards my business - mommyhood. It's great for when I need to give people my contact info quickly. Above is the one I use, although my personal info like my last name and phone numbers are edited out. They have a lot of cute ones at Vista Print.com. They have an offer for 250 free cards but the selection is limited. You can also choose the $10 special (with the $5 off savings) and have a large selection. Just search "mommy card."

Last Friday I was going to tell you about a book I read - Stealing Jenny by Ellen Gable - but I was so preoccupied with the my vomit shower and Matthew's near death experience (how's that for an upbeat topic?) that I never got to it. Here's the summary, "After three heartbreaking miscarriages, Tom and Jenny Callahan are happily anticipating the birth of their sixth child. Their neighbor, however, is secretly hatching a sinister plot which will find Jenny and her unborn baby fighting for their lives." The story is well written and although the kidnapping is a harrowing tale, the book is also touching as it explores the topics of love, courage, forgiveness and trust in God, both in the main plotline and the flashbacks of Jenny and Tom's beginning friendship. I may not recommend this book if you are a pregnant woman prone to worry (especially if like me, you recently saw a documentary about real life women who were in similar situations. Scary!) However, to the others, I wholeheartedly recommend the book. You can get it in paperback or download it to your kindle for only $2.99.

hun_gam.jpg

After the suspense of that story I was looking for something else that would keep my interest. A number of people I know have been taking about The Hunger Games and there has been so much hype about the movie that I downloaded a free sample chapter onto my kindle. Let's just say that I read the first chapter and was drawn in immediately and downloaded the rest of the book. That whole day I was sneaking my iPhone out and trying to read pages in between whatever I was doing. Finally after everyone was in bed I read well into the night and breathlessly finished the last page. There is a great Book Review and Parents' Guide of The Hunger Games Trilogy from a Catholic perspective over at Catholic Lane.com. It begins:

"The Hunger Games is a futuristic, sci-fi series that draws heavily on themes of violence, war and power. It is set in the dystopia created by the Capitol, the ruling class that satiates its own pleasures at the expense and oppression of the 12 Districts. The Districts, which are made up of the working class, provide the Capitol population with everything it needs to continue its own survival and remain in power.

The story commences with Panem, the country that emerged from the civil war ruins of what was once North America, preparing for the annual Hunger Games. The Games are televised live and are mandatory viewing for every citizen in the nation. They were instituted as a punishment for the Districts' attempted rebellion against the Capitol years ago. Every year each of the 12 Districts must provide one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen who will fight to the death on live television until only one child is still alive. The Games exist to remind the people in the Districts that not even children are beyond the reach of the Capitol's power..." (Continue reading.)

The guide reviews all three books so Spoiler Alert if you haven't read them already. There is also a list of topics and discussion starters for those parents with older children who will want to read these books.

hun_gam2.jpg

To show you how much I loved reading The Hunger Games, Brian suggested that he watch the kids and I take an afternoon off since I've been so busy with household stuff and the school fundraiser ect. I told him I'd like to see the Hunger Games movie this weekend. He was surprised since I've never gone to the movies alone but he was more that happy to give me some time off. So I've bought my ticket and have my handkerchief and a bag of peanut M&M's in my purse. Tomorrow afternoon this mama will be ready for 2 1/2 hours of action and drama. After that I'll be ready to come home and kiss my husband and kids and hold them close!

In the meantime, have a great weekend and may the odds ever be in your favor.

There are so many crazy and sad stories about Hollywood actors these days that it is refreshing to see someone who is trying to take his faith seriously and trying to live it in their everyday life as best as they know how. I especially love when the story includes the person coming out of a very dark place and into the light of God's grace and mercy. Here's a snippet of an interview with Mark Wahlberg where he talks about his family, his faith and the importance of prayer in his life.

Since I didn't get to see the new Downton Abbey until last night, I missed the Twitter party on Sunday night. Yet, I had plenty to say when I did watch it so here is my unpublished twitter feed while watching Downton Abbey. Feel free to share your thoughts!

BTW, if you missed the show you can watch it online here.

UPDATE:Brian just got home from work. He was talking to a coworker from the UK. She has already seen the entire season. She said there is even more drama and turmoil coming and that Vera Bates gets even nastier. After this season there is/was a Downton Abbey Christmas special that wrapped up many of Season 2's conflicts, yet leads into new stories in the upcoming Season 3. Something to look forward to!

*********************

The kids are asleep. The lights are dimmed. I am so ready for Downton Abbey! #DowntonPBS

Laura Linney looks as excited as we are.

How did anyone make it out of there alive? #war

That's why we love Downton, Michael. "Seems like another world." (Yet, we can always relate to the human nature.)

Ethel is a cheeky little thing.

The best lines are always from Lady Dowager. #whatisaweekend?

Brian, "What kind of name is Lavinia??" #villianousname

Dearest, Sybil. I just want to hug you.

No one eavesdrops like O'Brien.

Wow, I wasn't expecting Cousin Isobel and Lady Dowager to be agreeing on something.

Aw, Bates. I've loved your character in the last three movies/series I've seen you in. (Downton, North & South and Lark Rise to Candleford.)

Will those two sisters ever stop being nasty to each other?

Poor Mary. Nothing like regret.

Of course Lavinia looks sweet but we'll not stop wishing Mary and Matthew come to their senses.

Poor William. He needs a hug too.

Lord Grantham/Papa always seems to be the last to know.

Oh, no! Mrs. Vera Bates is in the picture now? I thought she was dead or long divorced. Noooo! The writing is on the wall...

BTW, Bates, what kind of proposal was that?

How many times have I said that to Brian, "I'd give you a smack if I didn't want to kiss you so much."

Oh, no an Anna/Bates kiss to tug at our hearts before it is broken.

Quotable: "My my. You are very well placed if you are ever in trouble with the law."

O'Brien the Cat has a new mouse to tease.

Oh, yes, Matthew. Mary is so pleased to be "friends."

Anna and Bates are making plans. Anna is blissfully happy. This can only mean one thing. Disaster is right around the corner.

Mary and Matthew, you are breaking my heart.

There it is. The bombshell. And a nasty piece of work she is. #paininthearse

I can physically feel my blood boiling. Why can't she be thrown on the battlefield in the line of fire?

Mrs. Hughes! You shock me. I thought O'Brien was the master eavesdropper. #nosybodiesunite

No, dearest Anna. Don't be willing to live in sin with him. Think of Jane Eyre. If it is meant to be it will work out in the end.

Oh, Anna. Your tears have brought me to tears. #heartbreak

Daisy, that's one way to cheer William up but be careful, little one!

Hmm, Daisy. Was that look saying, "Oh, yes!" or "Oh, no!"?

How do people live in such conditions? #war

Lovely. First Vera. Now Thomas is back.

Quotable, "If I was a gentleman, I wouldn't want to know." "But you're not." "Fortunately."

Quotable: "Flattered is a word posh people use when they are getting ready to say no."

Be patient, Branson. She may come around.

Oh, God. I guess that bullet had his name on it. #irony #war

Poor Papa. I smell another major let down.

And there it is. An honorary position.

Is Lord Grantham ever going to find out about the scandal?

Checking for vapors? Classic, O'Brien.

Edith, don't be so annoying. Leave Mary to her praying. #pest

I love how the love of a good man can change a selfish heart. I'm rooting for you, Mary.

We're seeing a whole other side of Thomas. Is he going to be less hateful now? #hopeful

Well, that's one way to get off the battlefield. Ouch.

Lang seems like a decent chap. I like the look of his eyes. I hope I am not disappointed.

Is Ethel into Lang? I'm not used to O'Brien being nice.

With a single look O'Brien says, "Give it up. Mosley. It's never going to happen."

Edith, you never looked so good as you do on that tractor! Good for you.

I guess Thomas isn't turning over a new leaf. He's as nasty as ever. #dashedhopes

Don't even think about it, Ethel.

Why does Sir Richard look so familiar?

"Her uncle and I are old friends..." Oh, no. I smell another scandal.

And the longing glances continue. #maryandmatthew

Dear Carson. Don't you dare die on us.

Never mind the blasted dress, Edith! #pest

Another showing of O'Brien's softer side. #newleaf?

Sir Richard...Sir Richard...what do I know you from? I can see you...but it's hazy in my mind...younger...threatening someone...grabbing her by the wrist...that voice...

I can't stand it. Must look him up quickly... That's it. Mr. Preston from Wives and Daughters. Now I can see the scene clearly. #imdb

Is that why you are so nasty, Thomas? Lack of real love?

Sir Richard/Mr. Preston has the same MO. Grabbing a young lady by the wrist and threatening her.

At first I thought the farmers were brother and sister. Then I thought, how sweet. Edith is falling in love with a farmer.

Brian just informed me that he is the sick farmer from Season 1. What? They better stop flirting with each other! #thatsnotyourwife

Oh, no. The poor soldier. Brian wants to know if Thomas gave him the razor as an "act of mercy." I don't think so but who knows?

Oh, Sir Richard you are just bursting with romantic notions, aren't you. I've seen more sentimentality from a block of cheese. #dumphim

Branson is getting hopeful again with Sybil.

Mary can't bring herself to tell Matthew what's on her heart. A letter, Mary. Pouring out your heart is traditionally done in a letter.

I liked Mr. Molesley in Season 1 but he is like a pesky gnat in Season 2. #shooflyshoo

I guess it's not only the posh that say "I'm flattered but..." #rejection

Oh, Edith, I finally started liking you and now you are a blasted homewrecker. And you, Mr. Cheeky Pig, your life was not spared so you can cheat on your faithful wife. Zip it up and get back to your house.

Quotable: "What then? Amputation in the dining room? Resuscitation in the pantry?" #ladydowager

Quotable: "Now come and give me a kiss!" "We'll have none of that!" There are many others that should have been told that!

Daisy, I guess that previous look was "Oh, no."

Of course you shouldn't accept him, Mary. He stinks to high heaven. #dumphim

Read between the lines, Edith. "Get your nasty hands off my man."

Noooo...it can't be two hours already. Blasted. Now I have to wait another week. Oh, well. Let me know what you think! #downtonwithdrawal

7 Quick Takes - 1/6/2012

Happy feast of the Epiphany! I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and New Year's. We have been out of town last week and I am still catching up on unpacking the suitcases and packing up the Christmas décor. I think that is why I am so reluctant to clean everything up...I don't want to box up my favorite time of the year. (Well, truth be told, I'm actually a procrastinating messcat but the other scenario sounds so much more romantic...)

- 2 -

For Christmas I bought Brian a Kindle Fire. Anyone who knows me also knows that I am always the first one to get an electronic toy and then later Brian joins the bandwagon. However, I wanted to get him something special and being a book lover I thought this would be a nice match. He was very excited and has been using it frequently.

kindle.jpg

- 3 -

I have been holding off buying one myself because I have been saving up for an ipad instead. However, the more I think about it; maybe I should get myself a laptop - one of those sleek, thin ones that you can carry in your bag. It may make more sense than an ipad. However, it will take me awhile to save up extra money for that so I may just use some gift money I have saved up and get a kindle for me as well. Brian said that I could have his Kindle Fire and he could get one of the basic Kindles since he mostly uses it just for his books. Tempting, but I don't know. Doesn't it seem like I am taking back the very gift I gave him? I'll have to think about it.

- 4 -

Speaking of electronic toys, a few months ago Brian and I both needed to replace our old iphones that weren't working. We bought the new 4s and I love mine! (Should I admit that I even sleep with it? Hmmm. No, I better not.) I happen to also like the new Siri and I'm always telling her to set up reminders or asking her to read me new texts when I'm busy. I showed Brian how to use Siri and he swears his iphone is defective. He asks her a question and she almost always responds, "I'm sorry. I do not understand what you are saying." I don't know if he is speaking too close or talking too robotic but he insists it is not his fault. To prove to him that his phone was fine I used it and asked Siri a number of questions. She always gave me the correct information. So I don't know what it is. He thinks it's a conspiracy. You know, the same conspiracy/evil plot that allows things to be hidden from his sight. Yet, when I walk into the room to look for the hidden object it is always right there in plain sight. (Yes, Siri and I have it all worked out.)

The one thing I do not like about the iphone is how delicate it can be in the hands of young ones. I bought a cute decorative case cover for my iphone and I loved the personal touch but it gave no protection whatsoever. If I was the only one using it, that would be fine. However, the kids will often use my phone to play games or watch videos, especially in a long line at the market. (One lady at Costco was amazed because I handed my phone to John-Paul and at the age of two he was able to zip through pages and folders and open up his games. It's second nature.) So my cute but worthless cover had to be replaced. My brother suggested that I get one of those ToughSkin rugged rubberized tread cases or one of those military grade ones made out of tires but that seemed a bit extreme.

phone_cover1.jpg

Instead I settled on the Marware SoftGrip Core Case, available in black, white and pink. I like that it has a protective silicone skin, textured dimples on back to minimize impact shock and extra coverage around the display. It makes the phone slightly bulkier and it doesn't slide easily into my pocket - I have to shove it in because of the silicone traction - but it is sturdy enough to handle the drops it has received so far.

Okay but enough talk about the electronic gadgets. How about a quick take about sewing something crafty and beautiful? (Obviously, not something I did.) My sister-in-law Maria is not only an incredible artist as you can see from this painting she gave us a couple years back...

... but she is also gifted at the sewing machine. Look at some of this handiwork!

mc_craft_1.JPG

She even made her own gift tags, gift bags and bows. And did I ever post what she gave me for my birthday last year?

mc_craft_4.JPG

A card with one of her sketches and matching magnets. So pretty! I'm trying to get her to open her own etsy shop and maybe when she gets over the tough first year of having a newborn, she will. I'll keep you posted. ;-)

I could make my last quick take about the cute aprons my other crafty sister EL made but she may want to post about that herself. Besides, all this sewing talk is depressing me. (I'm getting flashbacks of when I hemmed my pants with duct tape.) So instead I'll put one last plug for Downton Abbey, Season 2 coming Sunday night. Jen mentioned it on her Quick Takes and I was elated to see others are as smitten as I am. Brian and I will still quote lines from it to each other. ("What is a weekend?" hahahaha! Love it.) Okay, here are some closing photos for all you on Team Mr. Bates & Anna. ;-)

Okay that is it for now. I'm meeting up with some local Catholic moms this afternoon - something I've been sorely missing! Have a great weekend! xoxo

Watch the full episode. See more Masterpiece.

Congratulations to Downton Abbey, which is nominated for 11 Primetime Emmy awards (including outstanding miniseries). The show was awarded the Guinness World Records title for "highest critical review ratings for a TV show."

Masterpiece had 25 nominations for the 2011 Primetime Emmy® Awards -- the highest number of nominations the series has received in its 40-year history. (We're also rooting for Upstairs, Downstairs, even though we didn't like it as much as Downton Abbey and Sherlock, which we thoroughly enjoyed. As for Any Human Heart, I couldn't get passed the first episode. Sorry, didn't like it at all.)

If you fell in love with Downton Abbey last year, like I did, then you must be excited for the coming of Season 2. Although the UK will see the premiere in September, we'll have to wait until January. In the meantime, you can go The Daily Beast and click on the photos to read about what season 2 has in store for the characters. There are spoilers so I only skimmed that part since I hate knowing what is going to happen beforehand. I love the excitement of experiencing it as you are watching (or reading) the story. (Unlike my mom who will turn to the last page of a book to see if the ending is worth reading the book in the first place!)

Here is also a short behind the scenes look of Downton Abbey, Season 2.

Blessed Junipero Serra & the Carmel Mission: I can't believe that it is July 1st already! Time just goes too fast! On the plus side, today we celebrate two great feast days, the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Blessed Junipero Serra. Living in California, on summer vacations we would often visit the various missions when we were younger. It's funny that years later my parish church is the Mission San Carlos (Carmel Mission.) Brian and I were married here and our children were baptized here. It really is a beautiful Mission and it has the distinction of being where Blessed Serra is buried. If you are ever in the area, you should make a visit. In fact...

Founder's Day: ...if you'll be in the Monterey Bay area tomorrow (Saturday, July 2) stop by the Mission for the Founders Day celebration. There is music and live demonstrations of how things were made during the early days of the mission (ie. food and crafts) and a special Mass at 5:30 PM. (There is a dinner afterwords but you need tickets for that.) It's always interesting and a lot of fun.

Cars 2 is too scary for little kids!: We are big Pixar fans in our house with the favorite movies of the kids being Cars, Toy Story and Walle. Bella used to be obsessed with Cars and had all the toys for it. Now Andrew loves Cars (and inherited the toys) and was so excited to see the new movie for his birthday. Since I am the one who usually takes them to the movies, Andrew was excited to have a daddy date with Brian as his movie buddy. Bella had a treat and was movie buddies with my visiting sister. From what Brian told me, the movie started out okay but it was really violent and should have been rated PG not G. By the last third of the movie Andrew (who just turned 4) got too scared with all the shooting, cars dying and the bad guys trying to kill Lightning. He started crying so Brian had to take him out to the lobby. Bella finished the movie with my sister and she enjoyed it but she is 9 years old. So if you are taking your younger kids to see it, beware.

Is there such a thing as low cal food that's yummy?: I've been trying to eat healthier so I can get off the rest of the baby weight (and then some) so I tried a Weight Watchers recipe for macaroni salad. I'm a little leery of "light" recipes but this was really good. I used bow tie pasta, substituted half the celery with red bell pepper and added a bit more fresh Italian parsley, which gave it a nice touch. It was really tasty. Check it out at Weight Watchers.com Recipies: Macaroni Salad

Summer Reading: Brian purchased the book Poor Banished Children and I hope to start reading it next week. There is an interesting interview with the author Fiorella De Maria over at Ignatius Insight. If I like this book, I'll check out her other novels.

He can't possibly be teething??: How soon can a baby start teething? Matthew is not yet three months but he is drooling and gnawing as if he's teething. It just seems too early for that.

"JFT": My "just for today" goals: First, when things get hectic I'll recall today's gospel reading "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" and I will turn my heart to Christ for strength. Second, I'll get that overflowing basket of clean laundry folded!

That's it for today. Have a wonderful 4th of July holiday! God bless America and watch over our troops.

I'm listening to Adele. I am in love with her voice.

Matthew is drifting off to sleep in my arms. After the 4th baby, I'm getting pretty proficient at typing with one hand.

I've been hearing a lot of people talking about Amazon prime and I have been interested but didn't want to spend the money. However, we order from Amazon so often I thought I'd give it a try. I love it. The roughly $6 a month it costs for 2-day delivery and easy/full refund returns is worth it. And I just realized we have free streaming of movies on our TV as well. Nice.

UPDATE: After reading this my sister recommended that I try Amazon Mom which gives me the benefits of Amazon Prime and discounts on items I buy anyway. I signed up today. :-)

Speaking of movies, Brian and I recently watched St. Giuseppe Moscati: Doctor to the Poor. Although it was in Italian with English subtitles (meaning I had to make sure the kids were asleep so I could pay attention) I really enjoyed it and was touched by his life story. I'd love to read a book about his life but I haven't seen one. If you get a chance, check it out.

Life with Bella and the three little guys has definitely kept my hands full but I have managed to find a few me-moments to take a look at other mom blogs. Lately I have loved my sister's blog Barefoot and Sometime Pregnant. Partly because I love keeping up with my little sis but I also love to read about other things than non-moms would find incredibly boring. :-) She recently updated the look of her site and has been posting quite frequently. Part of me loves the frequent posts and the other part of me wants to freakin' know where she finds the time! LOL!

Last weekend was Matthew's baptism. Unfortunately, the priest we had scheduled became ill the day before the baptism and was unable to perform the ceremony. We scrambled to find another priest but everyone we knew had a prior engagement. Finally we were able to get the new priest who just came to our parish, although we had never met him before. We were pleasantly surprised to find him very devout and holy. He performed a lovely baptism and we rejoiced that our little one now shares in the life of Christ.

- 7-

Here is a pic of our holy little man. (Don't laugh at the cheezy bow tie! LOL! It was originally Andrew's and the only outfit we could find that would fit him. Since then each boy has worn the same outfit and has become a funny tradition.)

There Be Dragons is an epic action-adventure romance set during the turmoil of the Spanish Civil War. The story traces the lives of two young men, Josemaria Escriva (Charlie Cox) and Manolo Torres (Wes Bentley), childhood friends who are separated by the political upheaval of pre-war Spain to find themselves on opposite sides as war erupts. Choosing peace, Josemaria becomes a priest and struggles to spread reconciliation by founding the movement Opus Dei (work of God).

Manolo chooses war and becomes a spy for the fascists. He becomes obsessed with a beautiful Hungarian revolutionary, Ildiko, who has joined the militia in pursuit of passion and purpose. But when Ildiko rejects him out of love for the courageous militia leader Oriol, Manolo's jealousy leads him down a path of betrayal.

As personal and national battles rage, the characters' lives collide and their deepest struggles are illuminated through the fateful choices they make. Each will struggle to find the power of forgiveness over the forces tearing their lives and friendship apart.

The movie opens on Friday, May 6, 2011. To find a theater near you visit http://www.dragonsresources.com/resources/theaters.html.

I love fall! It is my favorite season. Although here on the central coast of Cali, it feels more like summer. We get lots of fog and cool weather in July and August then it warms up in September and October. But now that November is here the chill is slowly moving in and anticipation for the holidays gets stronger. I am especially excited because we always spend a week in So Cal during Thanksgiving and I am sooo ready to see my family again - some of who have yet to meet John-Paul! Only 17 more days! WooHoo!

I tried that recipe for minestrone soup that my sis EL recommended. It was so tasty! Lots of veggies and flavor. Here's the link: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Jamies-Minestrone/Detail.aspx

Brian and I recently saw two movies with a Catholic theme. The first was Ostrov (Sold at http://www.notofthisworldicons.com). "The story begins in northern Russia during World War II. A Russian coal barge with a two-man crew is captured by a Nazi patrol boat. The Nazis force the young cowardly Russian furnace stoker, Anatolii, to shoot his captain. The Nazis blow up the barge but Anatolii is rescued by monks from a nearby monastery. Anatolii spends the rest of his life repenting in sorrow, and through this repentance becomes a God-bearing Fool-for-Christ who, with his God-inspired insights into human hearts, gives miraculous help to suffering people who come to him for aid. Nearing death Anatolii's own suffering is resolved through a miraculous manifestation of forgiveness."

It is a beautiful story and heartbreaking to watch Anatolii's sorrow over killing his captain, but he never gave up hope on God's mercy. In his humility and wretchedness, Anatolii became completely dependent on God and grew in holiness. God was then able to do marvelous wonders with the "little fool." (ie. He could read souls or knew when something bad was going to happen.) The story is in Russian but with subtitles.

Speaking of where we bought the movie, if you are looking for icons, check out Not of This World Icons.com. It is our favorite place to shop. So beautiful!

The second movie we saw was 2008's Henry Poole Is Here with Luke Wilson. It is not a religious movie but it had a surprisingly positive portrayal of the Catholic Church. Wilson plays Henry, a stand-offish loner (with a bit of mystery about him) that buys a house in his old neighborhood. His desire to be alone is thwarted by a friendly (and persistent) Catholic Hispanic woman who believes that a water stain on the side of Henry's house is actually a miraculous imprint of Jesus' face. During the course of the movie Henry must deal with his neighbors' faith, his own disbelief and anger, and his growing friendship with a single mom and her mute daughter. The movie is low-key and never preachy but there is a definite underlying message of faith and (physical/spiritual) healing. (Note: The movie is rated PG, mostly for language. Watch it when the kids are asleep.)

*** 6 ***

I also really enjoyed the soundtrack on the Henry Poole movie. There were some cool songs; however, there are two from the movie that are missing from the official soundtrack. If you get it from iTunes you'll have to download the Bob Dylan song (I didn't mind skipping that one) and the Blur (Song 2) separately. (I did download the Bur song - I hadn't heard them in years!)

*** 7 ***

Okay, Andrew is up and ready for breakfast so I need to get off the computer. I'll end with a pic of the kids from Halloween. Have a blessed weekend!

I've been running around all day and now that I am home I have no energy to even get out of my chair. So I thought I'd give the quick take Friday thing a try.

*** 1 ***

I just received my order of Pampered Chef items. I am looking forward to trying them out. I especially want to make the mini-quiches we had at the cooking party. I have to laugh at the recipe since it lists all their products within it, but regardless, they were delicious.

*** 2 ***

My mom is flying up from Southern California on Sunday and she will spend a week with us to help me with some pre-baby things - finishing the nursery (which is a corner of our bedroom), wash the baby clothes, do some bigger chore housework etc. Most of all I just love having her around and hearing her laughter. I can't wait! (And as I think more about the upcoming labor, it is also comforting to know that if she could handle nine labors, I can surely handle my third.)

*** 3 ***

I was looking at a friend's photos of their trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and it made me miss not going there more often. So I finally bought an annual pass for the whole family. Bella has been excited to see the new Sea Horse exhibit and I know Andrew will love the hands on kid's zone. Hopefully I can take my mom while she is here.

*** 4 ***

What I Am Reading: I took a break from my Agatha Christy novels when I borrowed a copy of Left to Tell by Immaculee Ilibagiza. I had started it but never got to finish. If you haven't read it, I highly recommend it!

*** 5 ***

What I Am Watching: I love old B&W movies and am leery to watch remakes of the old classics. Case in point - I rented the new version of The Women and it was so bad I couldn't finish it. Don't even bother. Rent the 1939 version with Norma Shearer and Joan Crawford. It's an interesting (and at times heartbreaking and at times humorous) view of female cattiness, marital infidelity, forgiveness and the "bad guy" getting his (hers) in the end.

*** 6 ***

What I Am Listening To: Matt Kearney's City of Black and White. Loving this disc right now.

*** 7 ***

Brian will be home in a few minute so I have to keep this last one short. He works so hard for us and even when he is tired he'll help me out with the kids or cleaning the shower or scrubbing toilets because it is hard for me to bend over with my growing belly and he doesn't want me smelling cleaner fumes. Sometimes I forget that it's all the little things he does that says he loves me. So tonight I have one of his favorite meals and the kids are going to bed early so we can have a little one-on-one time after a long and busy week.

Have a blessed night and weekend yourself!
